Lucille Ball had me in stitches during every episode of I Love Lucy. A lot of the male characters on television were enjoyable and interesting, but the strong female characters fascinated me to no end.

I loved reading, even back then, and I could never quench my thirst for knowledge. Over the years, my father has collected more than eight thousand titles on theology and psychology alone. All of my siblings had skipped one or two grades, and I was the youngest, so I had much to prove with both parents being educators. Part of it was my competitive spirit back then. By the sixth grade, I was reading a book a day. My mother signed me up for speed reading when I was in the third grade. They were a way for me to escape boredom and live my life vicariously through the eyes, actions, and words of others. We traveled quite a bit, and our parents taught us that the world is a big place and that variety is the spice of life.Įven though much of what I learned was taught outside of our home, my greatest joys were books and television. My parents encouraged it by constantly taking my siblings and me to plays, museums, and art galleries. As a child, I grew to have a love of the cultural arts.
